Here’s info of the new dates for workshops at ‘Charlie Boots’ 204 Gloucester Rd, Bristol- Make your own purse, knickers, dress, alter your own garments or simply learn to sew!
Learn the basics of how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and basic stitch control. If you have a machine and would like to learn how to use your own, you’re welcome to bring it to the class. During the second part of the session you will learn several seam finishes and learn how to use a domestic overlocker. Seams will include overlocked, plain closed, plain open seams, bias bound and French seams – All useful for a variety of fabrics and different visual effects.
Do you have a garment that’s too long/loose/tight/flared that you would like to alter? Are you forever seeing vintage/ second hand items of a style that is ‘nearly right’?…perhaps the neckline needs to be lower, the sleeves more fitted or the collar a different shape ?Then this workshop with Lisa is the the one for you! You can bring along a garment or two and you will be shown how to make an alteration or transform the garment into something else entirely.
You will have up to three more people in the workshop who are all likely to be doing something else so you can watch and learn from what they do too.
Obviously some alterations are a lot more time consuming than others so we ask that you do speak with Charlie or Lisa first to discuss what you want to do. Ideally, this will be by bringing your garment/s into the shop (call first to check who is working). Alternatively, we can discuss this on the phone.
This is a workshop for people who know how to use a sewing machine but you needn’t be a proficient sewer.
Design and Make Your Own Shift Dress
Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O and Victoria Beckham all rock this look and so can you! It’s a wardrobe staple, a timeless classic, iconic, flattering and extremely wearable. So why is it so hard to find one that fits you perfectly?
In this 6 week course you will design your perfect shift dress (this can be fitted or a more ‘tunic’ style), whether it be for the office, a day in the sun or a glam night out. You will make your own pattern from scratch and then go on to construct your original dress, which will fit you like a glove. No previous knowledge of pattern cutting or garment construction is needed, but students will need to be familiar with using a sewing machine.
Make Your Own Purse/Wallet From Recycled Inner Tubes
In this session, you’ll learn the basics of cutting a pattern, riveting & threading as you construct your unique coin purse or wallet. There is no sewing involved, and you’ll be learning traditional leather working techniques, as you work with this incredibly tactile & interesting material of rubber inner tube.
You’ll be provided with materials, the small scale machinery and will have a choice of 3 patterns to choose from. In addition to this, you’ll be guided to create embellishments for your personalised wallet – perfect for a gift or a treat for yourself!
Learn how to make a cute garter side knicker from pretty printed cottons or recycling vintage scarves, stretch fabric and elastic. You will also have the choice of using a small, medium or large pattern and be able to try on some samples to see which size fits you.
During the session you will design your own garment using a choice of prints and you will trace and cut out all the fabric pieces.
Using a domestic sewing machine and over locker you will learn how to sew and bag out seams, and how to attach and gather elastics using a measurement chart.
In the final part of the session you can add finishing touches with decorative ribbon, trims or buttons.
For real sewing perfectionists out there you will leave with enough confidence and skills to make many more pairs. You will be given a set of instructions to take away with you.
That’s Christmas and birthdays sorted!
Basic materials, printed cottons and elastics will all be provided and there will be a small charge for any printed vintage fabrics or scarves used.
The sewing machines and overlocker will be out for you to use and there will be a workshop leader on hand to help you with your project. Tools and equipment will also be there for you to use. There may be up to six people working on individual projects so it is probably best for you to bring along something which you are comfortable, to a certain extent, working alone on.
